Manga Review: A Certain Scientific Railgun

Photobucket

Title: A Certain Scientific Railgun
Author: Kamachi Kazuma, Fuyukawa Motoi
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Shonen, Sci-Fi
Art: A
Originality: A
Story: S
Characters: S+
Humor: A
Action: S

Impression: This is based on the spin-off novels of A Certain Magical Index and in my opinion overcomes the problems that the main story faces. In this spin-off, the main character is Misaka Mikoto and the story is about her encounters in the city on the Science side. The story is a hell lot more enjoyable than Index since it gives the more interesting characters a chance to shine. My favorite isn’t Misaka contrary to popular opinion but rather her sidekick Kuroko, an official member of their “student council enforcers” that has less than pure intentions towards Misaka. It’s not just because of that though, she’s a lot more brutal in this side of the story and her antics are a lot of fun to watch. The story arcs also feel interconnected instead of Index’s episodic format and there’s a lot good build up towards a conspiracy plot and foreshadowing that keep you curious about what’s to come. I do wonder how exactly the side stories fit into the main story as they sometimes clash with each other even though it’s told from Misaka’s point of view.
