Manga Review: Needless

Status: Ongoing
Genre: Shonen, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Art: A
Originality: C
Story: B
Characters: A
Humor: A
Action: S

Impression: This is about a kid who meets up with a dubious priest and his companion after escaping the consequences of his group’s failed attempt at a revolution. The priest and his companion are humans with “fragments”, some sort of plot device that gives them a unique and godly power or so they say and because of this they are called Needless – people who are unecessary to the world. Needless not working for the government are hunted down and killed or captured to further the research of a company backed by the government. It’s quite a spirited story backed up by its edgy art and a style reminiscent of Gurren Lagann’s “kick reason to the curb” attitude – there’s even a drill thrown in there in one of the battles. It’s not very original though as the special people with special powers being hunted down idea has been done to death. The story hasn’t shown itself to be very deep so far but it does have a few promising ideas and characters thrown in so it’s one to look out for. To those who have watched the anime: the action scenes in the manga are not censored so they turn out awesomely cool and funny at the same time.
