Manga Review: Hyakuen

Photobucket

Title: Hyakuen
Author: Tooyama Ema
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy
Art: A
Originality: A
Story: B
Characters: A
Humor: A
Action: B

Impression: I like Tooyama Ema’s work. She’s a mangaka that learns from her previous works and continues to improve and this is one of her recent publications about two girls living together in small apartment who are saving up for things they want to buy or do. One of them is very conservative with her expenditures while the other is basically a typical Bruneian – we spend our money almost as fast as we earn them(As friendly as we are, Bruneians have a lot of bad habits like making other people wait. I am working on analysis of the typical Bruneian for a post). Anyway the penny pincher wants to save up for a trip to Germany so she can see her grandfather while the spendthrift wants to buy a scooter so she can travel around – yes, she’s a bit of an airhead. It’s got good jokes and it gives people a chance to laugh at themselves since it’s about spending money, a daily event that plagues the minds of people in society. I like the chemistry between the two characters and despite the lack of yuri in this slice of life story it’s still a nice manga.
