Manga Review: Embalming - The Another Tale of Frankenstein

Photobucket

Title: Embalming – The Another Tale of Frankenstein
Author: Nobuhiro Watsuki
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Shonen, Fantasy
Art: B
Originality: B
Story: B
Characters: B
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: Yes, that is what the title is supposed to be despite the bad grammar. It’s the story of people who have died and are resurrected as monsters based on the classic horror monster that doctor Frankenstein created. Those who become frankensteins gain some sort of power in exchange for their gradual loss of their humanity and there is a hidden society dedicated to creating and maintaining frankensteins. It’s done by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Samurai X and Busou Renkin so fans will tell you it’s great and fresh but to be honest it’s really nothing special. My Kendo seniors will probably get mad at me for saying this but Samurai X wasn’t really anything special after I read through a hell lot of other manga and I actually thought Busou Renkin was a lot better (CAPTAIN BRAVO!) despite the rushed ending. The way he’s pacing the story is also completely ineffective for a monthly manga so if he wants to make a big improvement he should try to get D.Gray-man’s former weekly spot since that’s moving to the monthly Jump publications.
