Movie Review: Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Just spent two hours watching the Blu-Ray release of the second in the Rebuild of Evangelion Tetralogy(A 4-part version of Trilogy) and I must say that it simply blew me away. I only wish I had a larger screen and surround sound to watch it with cause damn it all if it wasn't anything less than widescreen-worthy. I'm also putting up screenshots here since it gives me an excuse to use my spoiler tags.
Click for Spoilerific Images!

The movie picks up just some time after where it left off from the last one but it starts off with fast and hard with a battle between one of the new Eva units exclusive to the remake movies and the third angel. This Makinami Illustrious character is very much a female bespectacled version of Kamina of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann fame as her battle tactics really don't follow any strategy other than shaking off the damage, attacking head on and having fun.

After that's done we're treated to the scene where Shinji and Gendo meet at Yui's grave and this is the scene where the difference between the Shinji in these movies and the Shinji in the TV series becomes apparent through a subtle gesture on his part. That one simple gesture that he did in these movies shows how much more of a positive character this one is than the original one. Also, this is the point where you know things are going different this time around.

I'd rather not go into depth about what happens from here until the unit 03 shows but things basically go the same way the anime did with several scenes thrown in there to flesh out the characters. Asuka is slightly more mellow and much less shrill than her TV counterpart while Rei steadily becomes more and more human as the movie goes on. Even Gendo somehow seems to be more fatherly, with much more still not very obvious, in this incarnation than any other official one that I've seen. These changes make it so much easier to sympathize with the characters and also strengthens many scenes in the latter part of the movie regardless of whether or not you actually like the characters themselves.

The real divergence point comes up in the form of the new pilot selected to test out unit 03. Like I said, the new depths that were developed in Asuka's character made her a much more likeable character so when it came down to the Dummy Plug vs Unit 03 scene, it was much, much more powerful than the original one. What made it more horrific than it should have been was the children's song that played while unit 01 tore unit 03 inside out culminating in a brilliantly stretched out scene of unit 01 grinding munching down on unit 03's entry plug.

It then returns back to the series for a little bit before the final battle in the movie begins. We're treated to an awesome scene where Makinami hijacks unit 02 and goes berserk on the newest angel along with unit 00 armed with a nuclear missile sans the launcher. They fail, unit 00 gets absorbed by the angel and Geofront turns into the wasteland. After seeing what had transpired while he was in the shelter, Shinji makes his way to unit 01's cage and gets back on the horse just in time to stop mission control from being destroyed with a point blank laser. Shinji takes it outside and tries to subdue it when the power runs out.

This is where you really see the difference is this Shinji, this is where he refuses to stop and forces unit 01 to move for him in some never seen before "Awakened" mode that grants his unit the strongest AT field so far along with eye beams. I kid you not, beams of energy shoot out of unit 01's eyes and takes down the angel so he can rescue Rei by somehow transforming it into an Eva sized Rei through sheer determination. It's no wonder why people have been saying that the movie has been taking notes from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The once whiny and scared Shinji had grown into a real man with the balls to get what he wants. It makes for one of the most heartwarming and intense scenes so far and all those fleshing out scenes finally pay off here.

I have to say that this was an excellent movie and I liked all the changes they've made to the plot and characters. The mind screwiness is toned down along with all the angst that franchise has been famous for and what we get is an Evangelion with a better overall balance between characterisation and plot. They even managed to fit in some rather charmingly I myself couldn't help but be reminded of the Evangelion: RE-TAKE doujin series while I was watching this as there were several scenes that paralleled it. I'm even wagering that Hideaki Anno picked up the doujinshi at one point and it inspired him to come up with the Rebuild movies. I mean both featured the characters with more well rounded personalities, both were handled much more optimistically and both played the idea of their events being repetitions of the original series. Who among those who have read RE-TAKE didn't feel that Rei's dinner plans didn't mirror Asuka's marriage plans in the doujin? Seriously, this just has to be based on RE-TAKE.

I'm definitely looking forward to the release of Rebuild of Evangelion 3.33 Quickening but sadly I expect that'll be sometime in mid 2012 since these films seem to be going by a two year gap between movies. In any case, I hope Anno delivers some more of this awesome shit he's shoveling onto the silver screen since the sales for the movies are record high. The finale of the "original" plot will end with the next film and the fourth movie is supposedly a further extension of the events after that - getting RE-TAKE vibes again. Oh well, RE-TAKE or not, more awesomeness seems to be in store for us in the next one. After all, Kaworu impales unit 00 and stops Third Impact in time so what else can I expect but awesomeness?

Manga Review: Aphorism

Image

Title: Aphorism
Author: Kujo Karuna
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Shonen, Fantasy, Horror
Art: A
Originality: S
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: A

Impression: This is about a group of teenagers who enroll into this prestigious school in the middle of a city where the only real requirement is that the students are able to see this floating castle in the sky. Naturally, not everyone can see it and thus these kids find out there’s more to the bargain they’re getting. In exchange for a successful life after graduation, the kids must survive three years of getting attacked by these monsters that appear only in their school and only when the castle in the sky casts a shadow right over the school. But the kids aren’t entirely powerless against these monsters as they get the abilities based on a Kanji they write upon being inducted into this whole system. This has a lot potential and based on the first volume alone, the author is really good at executing the plot. The events are paced perfectly and you get caught up in the urgency and tension that the kids go through as they learn more and more about the strange phenomenon they are put through. If the future chapters prove to be as good as the first few then I’m changing the story and action scores to S’s. Really looking forward to the upcoming ones. Hurry up Shinnen!

Manga Review: Seven Ocean

Image

Title: Seven Ocean
Author: Minazaki Suu
Release: Monthly
Status: Finished
Genre: Shonen, Adventure
Art: A
Originality: A
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: A

Impression: This is a short but sweet series about a guy who finds himself in debt after having been conned into giving money to some girl who had claimed to have needed the money for her dying father’s surgery. This leads to him becoming the captain of the ship of a different girl who lent him the money to pay his debts and now he has to help her hunt down these monster sea creatures in the seas. It’s one of those Shonen series that really knew what it was doing but was shot down in the prime of its life for some reason. From what I hear, the author was incapacitated - whatever that means. It’s got high a dosage of low-brow and slapstick silliness that normally doesn’t do much for me but it manages offset the downsides with a pretty interesting premise, awesome action scenes and some pretty solid characters. But like I said, the only real downside is the abrupt ending. Fortunately it ended in such a way that a sequel not too unlikely.

Manga Review: Metal Heart

Image

Title: Metal Heart
Author: Yoon Jae Ho
Release: Monthly
Status: Finished
Genre: Shonen, Sci-fi, Romance, Comedy
Art: B
Originality: A
Story: B
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This is about a Korean otaku who is a genius at a fighting game called metal heart and because of this he gets called in by the company who made the game in order to test out the sequel. Or so they say. The actual reason behind them calling him in would merit a spoiler tag but I’m too lazy to do so and as such I will say that for whatever reasons, the robot the company made to emulate one of the game characters ended up emulating the character in the dating sim version of the game. Now the boy, along with the company, has to go through a real life version of the game in order to reset the robot back to the default setting. It’s got an interesting set up here and while the author does play around with some tropes throughout the story, the twists range from clichéd to refreshing chapter to chapter. The general flow does work well enough to keep me interested in the story and it does show quite a bit of promise in for future chapters(whenever the scanlators get back to this) so it’s nice manga to pick up.

Manga Review: Seitokai no Ichizon

Photobucket

Title: Seitokai no Ichizon
Author: Aoi Sekina, Inugami kira, 10mo
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy, Harem
Art: B
Originality: B
Story: C
Characters: B
Humor: B
Action: C

Impression: This is the manga adaptation of the Seitokai no Ichizon novels. It’s about a five-man student council who consist of a loli, a tomboy, a fujoshi, an femme fatale and the only guy in the council, a guy who declares he’s aiming for a harem ending with the rest of them. I certainly enjoyed the anime for its great comedy and its surprising character depth but the manga lacks the quality that made it so endearing. To clarify, a good deal of the humor doesn’t match up to the anime even though the jokes and references are essentially the same while the characterization just isn’t there. If you haven’t watched the anime then you don’t really have much of reason to check it out and if you have, you don’t have much of a reason to stick with it. No idea about the novel readers though.

Hatsune Miku Append Videos

Remember those great Miku Append videos I said I'd post up? Here they are:

Hikari to Kage no Ryuu

Ryuukotsu no Fue no Shoujo

Zetsubou Game

Hoshi no Kakera

Saga of A Hero

Proud of You

Rain*Sweet*Umbrella

Heaven Is A Place On Earth Project Diva Video

I'm loving Append's updated voice modes. They really add a lot more range to Miku's voice and blends in better with the instruments in the song. I love that renewed portion of "Hoshi no Kakera" since it really shows off how much has improved and the last one shows how well she can sing in English with the updates. You really have to hear all of these for yourself. Heil to the Virtual Idol, Hatsune Miku!

Manga Review: Aflame Inferno

Image

Title: Aflame Inferno
Author: Im Dal Young, Kim Kwang Hyun
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Shonen, Fantasy
Art: C
Originality: B
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This about a human high school playboy who is unfortunate enough to run into a pair of demons duking it out. One of them happens to be the fabled eastern king of these demons and it’s trying to run away in the body of the dog it possessed. Both the king and the boy are dying so the king decides to possess the boy and work with him to take down their would-be killer. This is the start of the boy’s encounters with the secret demon society hiding amongst the humans. The premise certainly sounds clichéd and dull but I must tell you that the best parts of this series does not come from the battles or the setting but rather the excellent characterisation and the focus that’s put on them. The setting does develop into something more interesting later on but it always plays second fiddle to the agenda of whichever character has the spotlight on them. I honestly find it strange for the main character himself to be ridiculously dull and flat when compared to the other characters in the series but thankfully the focus tends to shift between these characters in later chapters and this is where the story really starts getting interesting. The story’s pacing feels a bit slow for a monthly publication at what should be the point just before the halfway point and while this isn’t really something just drags on and on, I can’t say that the build-up matches the publishing life. Still, I’m hoping that the author keeps to the character driven route it’s been following instead of getting back to the original setup.

Manga Review: Nana Mix

Title: Nana Mix
Author: Akane Kotetsu
Release: Monthly
Status: Finished
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Art: A
Originality: F
Story: C
Characters: C
Humor: C
Action: B

Impression: This is about a girl who as a child went abroad to America and has now come back to Japan as a teenager in order to hook up with her old childhood friend for the sake of her grandfather. She however finds that the boy has girls surrounding him and concludes that she has a lot of obstacles to overcome before achieving her goal. Sadly, it’s all in her head and this series filled with a LOT of moments where you just have to take it all in and groan out loud. Nothing else I’ve read has been as generic as this series is and it shows by how one dimensional all the characters are. The Tsundere, The Nancy Boy, The Tease and The Boobs. I’d have called the last one Miss Fanservice but every female character in this series is clearly Miss Fanservice. They even try to make some meta-jokes about this but like all the rest of the jokes in this series even the meta stuff is shallow and falls flat on my funny bone. There’s no clever twists, no character development, no heart and absolutely no point to it. Heck, if the guy actually did become a trap while the girl was away like they joked about then I wouldn’t have given the originality a score any lower than a B. The plot execution itself is neither here nor there in terms of quality but the utter lack of originality is crippling this series so badly that I just want to grab a shotgun and put it out its miserable existence. I even liked To-Love-Ru more than this and I’m using the word “liked” very loosely here. As pointless as that series was, at the very least it had some originality to it unlike this waste of time here.

Manga Review: Sankarea

Image

Title: Sankarea
Author: Hattori Mitsuru
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Supernatural, Romance, Comedy, Horror
Art: S
Originality: A
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This one’s about a boy who’s obsessed with Zombies to the point he actually tries to bring his dead cat back to life with an occult ritual in an abandoned building. Coincidentally, he happens to meet a popular high class girl who frequently comes by that building to have her frustrations vented out by screaming into the well outside. She then realizes that she was seen and in her attempt at having him keep her embarrassing secret, she learns about the boy’s obsession and this starts her off in the world of zombies. Through a series of events later on, she actually does become a zombie and this is where the series gets really interesting. Despite having only the first few chapters out in English, this series proves itself to be a fun and intriguing story filled with some interesting takes on several character archetypes and a fresh approach to the whole Zombie genre that may not be new but sure hasn’t been done enough. I love the clear and crisp art style the author uses here and the way he manages to use it to throw in scenes that could initially come across as funny or romantic at first but can be twisted into something with more horrific implications if one gives more thought to it or if more details are given later on. The way I see it this could go either way between being a full blown love comedy with a bit of horror or a love comedy that slowly mutates into a horror manga. In any case, I am looking forward to future chapters.

Manga Review: Karin

Title: Karin
Author: Kagesaki Yuna
Release: Monthly
Status: Finished
Genre: Supernatural, Shoujo, Romance, Comedy
Art: B
Originality: B
Story: A
Characters: S
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This manga is about a teenage vampire girl who has a unique biology where instead of sucking out blood from her prey injects her own excess blood into them instead. This perplexing condition allows her to live as a normal teenage girl unlike the rest of her family who have had to abandon the daytime world upon puberty. The main character herself is sweet and naïve, a stark contrast to the rest of her family, and also has trouble relieving her need to eject blood due to a trauma in the past that results in her periodically having severe nosebleeds to get rid of the extra life fluid. This story is about her developing relationship with a human boy who discovers her secret and their attempts to get past the species boundary the other baggage the two of them carry on their persons. There’s a lot focus on the development of the characters and their relationships and that’s the best part of this series. The author managed to come up with characters and situations that make it easy for readers to sympathize with and become compelled enough to want to read on. The quality of the story is consistently good up till the ending which was pretty damned rushed despite it actually managing to wrap up the story’s loose ends. It wasn’t the most satisfying way to end a series like this but in some ways the ending was actually realistic in some ways. I didn’t like how it happened but I guess that’s just proof of well made the characters were.

Manga Review: Shinigami Alice

Title: Shinigami Alice
Author: Izumiya Otoha
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Seinen, Yuri
Art: B
Originality: B
Story: B
Characters: B
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This story is about a girl who was unlucky enough to encounter a serial killer but was lucky enough to be saved just in the nick of time by another girl who was hunting down the guy as part of her duties as an assassin. Her job is to hunt down rogue members of the organization of assassins and this stoic young lady happens to be the best assassin in the organization despite being a mere teenage girl. Not knowing what the new emotion that came forth from this meeting, the assassin disobeyed protocol and spared the girl’s life and from that point onwards their affections for each other grew with further meetings. I like this series but it doesn’t really stand out in any particular way. The story’s pacing is a bit off here as the relationship between the two main characters is established quickly and developed through a montage and some monologue right before having the story head in the “I’m an assassin and now I must protect her from the others” route. It really could have done so much better if it had taken the time to properly develop their relationship and the assassin’s humanization progress.

Manga Review: Narue no Sekai

Image

Title: Narue no Sekai
Author: Marukawa Tomohiro
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Sci-Fi, Slice of Life, Romance, Comedy
Art: A
Originality: A
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This series is about a young human boy who meets this girl who claims to be an alien who just saved his life from another shapeshifting alien in the form of a dog and this incident stirs his interest in the self-proclaimed alien. His world is then rocked to its core when her claims proves to be true but this only serves to bolster his desire to get to know the girl better and get closer to her. Now this is a particularly interesting series as it started at the turn of the last millennium and yet somehow is so full of tropes and refreshing ideas that if it weren’t for the art style, you’d think that this was a recent work cleverly taking advantage of the clichés established in the past decade. The first few setup chapters were a bit rocky but after the characters dynamics get established you’ll find that this is pretty a damn good Slice of Life series that just happened to involve aliens. Speaking of which, the characters themselves are quite entertaining to watch and their characterisation doesn’t suffer from being predictable clichés, something that I wish I could say for newer works which sadly don’t play with said clichés enough. To sum it all up, this series was ahead of its time at the period of its conception and still stands to outdo newer series that are of the same vein as this one. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the chapters for this series.

Manga Review: Shitsurakuen

Image

Title: Shitsurakuen
Author: Naomura Tooru
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Seinen, Yuri
Art: A
Originality: S
Story: A
Characters: A
Humor: B
Action: B

Impression: This is about a girl named Sora who transfers into this famed private academy only to find that the school, unknown the outside world, carries out this game that sets back the feminist movement a couple centuries back. It involves girls being treated as 2nd class citizens within the boundaries of the school and these girls are used to provide weapons to the chauvinist scumbags for augmented reality battle game. If you don’t know what that means, it’s an interactive form of virtual reality that blends in with the real world so that the students in this series can battle it out like they’re in an RPG. Things change however when our main character shows up in the school somehow possessing the equipment needed to play on the same field as the boys. She who has always dreamed of being a knight decides to take part in the game to win girls from the oppressive male students and free them from the tyranny that is the game. Aside from the gender equality themes, there’s also a good deal of mystery thrown in there courtesy of secret maneuvers that certain characters make behind the scenes of Sora’s battle and it turns this otherwise straightforward story into something much more intriguing. With all that’s been said allow me to me sum this up in a neat, little and compact formula:

Yuri + Great Art + Interesting Characters + Yuri + Depth + Mystery + YURI = Hell Yeah!!

P.S. The author really knows how to tease Yuri lovers.

Full Manga Review Index!

Good Job!

I have finally listed down all of the manga I've reviewed in this single alphabetical index and it made me wish that I'd done it from the beginning. Why? I've written 250 damn reviews and I just listed down all the links one by one and lined them up alphabetically. At the very least, I won't have to that again in the future but I'm still going to have to separate 35 triple manga reviews into individual ones to keep up with the count. I am amused by the fact that I have yet to review any manga starting with letter Q or X. I'll try to find something that fits that criteria so I have the entire alphabet listed down. Hope this makes accessing my reviews easier and that it lowers my bounce rate.

In the future, I'm thinking of adding icons next to each one to mark what kind of manga they are and if I recommend them. I can already see myself go "Ugh...".

Title: Void
Author: Nanatsuki Kyoichi
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Sci-Fi, Shonen
Art: B
Originality: C
Story: D
Characters: C
Humor: C
Action: B

Impression: This is story set in world where people with powers exist and the story revolves around the actions of one particular superpowered masked man who steals the ability of other superpowered humans as his own for the sake of his own survival which ends at 5 chapters. Sure, a manga about Sylar does sound pretty damn cool but sadly that’s not what’s here in this series. What it is however is an overly ambitious series that started off in a vague and unlikeable manner and ended its first arc in an even more ambiguous and unsatisfying manner. The premise gets set up over the first few chapters and then takes a different turn down Rushed & Overdone Street from as retcons gets dropped in from there. Retcons! In the first five chapters of all places! If I hadn’t read that this series was still ongoing I would still have thought that arc 1.0 was the swift end of a canceled series.

Manga Review: Franken Fran

Image

Title: Franken Fran
Author: Kigitsu Katsuhisa
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Horror, Comedy, Seinen
Art: A
Originality: S
Story: B
Characters: A
Humor: A
Action: B

Impression: Let me start things off by saying that this series is NOT for the faint of heart, the easily offended and those prone to queasiness. Also, this is highly NSFW but in a different way from the norm although there is a little bit of the normal factors of NSFW but that gets overshadowed by the other reasons, namely gore and squick. This series is about a teenage Frankenstein’s monster named Fran and she operates a business where people come to her for these bizarre surgeries for whatever reason which often leads to nasty consequences. The protagonist has a warped sense of honor as a surgeon and carries herself with child-like innocence and wonder despite all the horrifying deeds she’s done as a doctor who treasures the sanctity of life. In fact, her assassin of a sister actually believes it’d be much more merciful to kill the people rather than letting them be subjected to one of Fran’s operations; you’d have to be inhuman not to agree with her. Basically, it’s Black Jack meets the Cthulhu mythos and if you think you can handle the giant insects, abhorrent crimes against nature, dead baby humor and the risk of looking like a sick twisted fuck, you’ll find that Franken Fran is a delightful blend of comedy, silliness and food for thought. And yeah, I like this series a lot.

Manga Review: Arakawa Under The Bridge

Image

Title: Arakawa Under The Bridge
Author: Nakamura Hikaru
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Comedy, Seinen
Art: C
Originality: A
Story: B
Characters: A
Humor: A
Action: B

Impression: This is the source material for Shaft's latest anime and it is about a young straitlaced young man who meets this girl who claims she's an alien from Venus while he was in predicament of having to retrieve his pants from the girder of a bridge. Predictably he slips off only to be saved by the girl. Due to his upbringing he must repay the deed otherwise he will suffer asthma anxiety attacks and as such he agrees to fall in love with the girl to repay the favor which leads to him having to live under the bridge from then on. While that doesn't sound too out there considering that I've heard of similar events in real life(Seriously. I have.) this series draws upon the absurdity of its characters and their interactions. The manga for better or worse is much less dependent on the abstract stylings featured in the anime and this makes it much more straightforward and easier to follow. I also found that some scenes from the manga are left out in the series and I find that to be waste as I find that these scenes add more depth to the characters and adds to their charm points. It's a good read and while I was having trouble deciding on whether or not to give the humor a B rating, I felt that it'd deserve an A for future chapters as it only gets better with more and more characters. That and the fact it has to get better for it to run for as long as it has.

Bandwidth Thief!!

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Okay some dickhead came up with the brilliantly assholeish idea of using someone else's image on their site. Normally, this wouldn't much of problem but that same idiot didn't even bother to upload that image to their own account and now I'm left with 2.6 gigs worth of bandwidth until the 21st and I usually use up 3 gigs or so every month. I would be ever so thankful if someone who speaks the language that http://www.teensos.net/ is in could go up to whoever runs it and get them to take it off ASAP. My god! Here I thought /b/tards were fucktards of the internet and then someone goes and pulls off a dick move like this. Thank you so very much you motherfucking son of a bitch.

This just ain't right

[EDIT]: The problem should be fixed now and I shouldn't be losing anymore bandwidth like that but chances are I'll run out of photobucket bandwidth over the next few days since I have 1.5 gb left meaning most of my pictures will be unavailable till the 21st.

Spoilers!

I have just added spoiler functionality to my blog

There you have it. You can now be sure to read reviews from this point forward without me spoiling you unnecessarily and I can be sloppier with my not spoiling you.

Manga Review: Marriage Royale

Photobucket

Title: Marriage Royale
Author: Navel, Natsuki Koko
Release: Monthly
Status: Ongoing
Genre: Harem, Romance
Art: B
Originality: C
Story: C
Characters: C
Humor: C
Action: E

Impression: This is about a normal every day high school guy who finds out he is the heir to some big powerful company and because of that he has to get married. His real father stages this competition for his son’s fiancés to compete over who gets to marry him and by this point I really should tell you not to bother with this one. First five chapters feel like a very long drawn out introductory chapter that could have been wrapped up in maybe two chapters so I will say it is slow as hell and the execution is bland, tasteless, plain, mundane and totally boring. It’s really not that good but since the visual novel got an adaptation then source material can’t have been too bad.

Movie Review: Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2, the sequel to the hit Marvel Superhero Movie of 2008, which I honestly thought wasn't as good as people make it out to be. The original was decent but I felt that the best scenes came too early and the pay off to all the build up wasn't executed very well. I didn't write a review for it but the sequel's a different story. Here's my review for Iron Man 2.

First off, let me just say that the advertising i.e. trailers for this movie were handled terribly. The first time I saw the trailer for this movie I was thinking "Is that all?". It basically spoiled the entire plot so I didn't have very high expectations for this movie and I am sad to say that the movie itself does not go any farther than the trailer shows like Dark Knight did. Not a good move that one, it really could have gone a bit further with the 2 hours it had.

Basically, Tony has announced to the world that he is Iron Man and 6 months after this it seems that he has brought upon world peace through his armored flyboy actions... somehow. Sometimes it's very hard to take the plot seriously at all with all of the stuff that goes on in this movie, suspending your disbelief as they say on TvTropes but I'll get to that later in favor of a run down through the synopsis. He gets on the government's nerves, bad guy shows him up at the F1 race, media fallout from the attacks follows, bad guy gets broken out of jail, Tony turns into a drunk ass, black best friend literally knocks some sense into him, Tony rediscovers his dad's legacy and finally onto the final battle where Iron Man and War Machine fight side by side against robots and the bad guy after the hiccups are taken care off. That's the plot and I cannot in good honesty say it was inspired. The poisoning plot was also underused, ill-timed and was fixed so soon an d easily that it really didn't live up to its potential as a plot point.

With plot leaving much to be desired, the actual scenes and direction were top notch. Particularly all the scenes that involve character development for Tony. Sure the story is cliche and terribly predictable but the movie more than makes up for it with all the tiny tidbits it throws at us. There were plenty of running gags, shout outs and witty lines in this movie and I enjoyed every bit of humor they threw at me. It was actually all these extra little details that made the movie so enjoyable. I really liked how War Machine actually threw a kitchen sink during one fight and I loved it when Tony treated the suit like they were normal clothes.

Of course, the battle scenes were excellent this time around with better pacing and choreography than the first though the last battle did end rather abruptly in an anticlimactic manner that made use of a Chekov's Gun from an earlier scene. I particularly loved the scenes where we see the femme fatale from S.H.I.E.L.D. throw people around with her Russian Judo ala Dragunov from Tekken. Dragunov happens to be my go to guy for playing Tekken so I was ridiculously impressed to see his moves get pulled off in real life. I do have to say the multiple camera close ups during the her battle with the men in black at the end should have been left out since they really broke the flow of what happened to be the most kickass scene in the movie.

Now back to the topic of the movie being hard to take seriously that I mentioned earlier. Was it Robert Downey Junior's portrayal of the jerkass richboy? Nope. The callousness of his character was a lot of fun to watch and though it did serve to lighten the mood of the story, it also served to make some scenes more powerful and believable. Was it the idiot ball that gets passed around among the villains? No, that was justified by their personalities and motivations but the movie could have done much better with more interesting and well written bad guys. It was actually the thought that went into the technology and science in the film. How does the man power his suit when there's clearly a tuxedo, race suit, etc. blocking the arc reactor from the suit? How the hell does drinking chlorophyll cure radiation/metal poisoning? Who actually designs new atoms like THAT!? I know rule of cool and refuge in audacity comes into play with all this but they're really, really pushing it here in this sequel. I don't care how plausible the technology in this movie was, it was all too damn unbelievable to take in properly.

That's it for my review on Iron Man 2. It wasn't as exciting as Dark Knight, wasn't as heroic as Spiderman 2 and certainly wasn't as compelling as Watchmen but it definitely outdid its prequel and in my book that makes it a pretty good and enjoyable superhero movie. Honestly, how did Iron Man get the same rating as Dark Knight when it wasn't even as good as Spiderman? Speaking of which, I hope to see good things from the reboot movie in 2012 and no more of the shit they did in the third movie.

Impression: This comes from the comedy genius who brought us GA Geijutsuka Art Design. This is actually her previous work and it seems to have been put on hold in favor of GA. It's a about a traveler dressed in black who travels around with a coffin strapped to her back. She, Kuro, is accompanied by Sen who was cursed to live in the body of 1000 bats and twin girls cat girls called Nijuku and Sanju(Who remind me of Noda from GA) who have the most mysterious abilities. This manga is done in 4Koma format and is drawn in her trademark cutesy childrens' book style giving the impression that you're reading a fairy tale rather than a manga. While this does appear to be as lighthearted as GA is, this series can actually be very dark at times with many of the issues that are brought up in the story. However, despite the depth and darkness of these plot points each chapter ends up being far more hopeful and endearing that one would expect when working with such elements. This is a very compelling story that manages to be amazingly charming and humorous despite the limitations of its format.
