Manga Review: Nana Mix

Image

Title: Nana Mix
Author: Akane Kotetsu
Release: Monthly
Status: Finished
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Art: A
Originality: F
Story: C
Characters: C
Humor: C
Action: B

Impression: This is about a girl who as a child went abroad to America and has now come back to Japan as a teenager in order to hook up with her old childhood friend for the sake of her grandfather. She however finds that the boy has girls surrounding him and concludes that she has a lot of obstacles to overcome before achieving her goal. Sadly, it’s all in her head and this series filled with a LOT of moments where you just have to take it all in and groan out loud. Nothing else I’ve read has been as generic as this series is and it shows by how one dimensional all the characters are. The Tsundere, The Nancy Boy, The Tease and The Boobs. I’d have called the last one Miss Fanservice but every female character in this series is clearly Miss Fanservice. They even try to make some meta-jokes about this but like all the rest of the jokes in this series even the meta stuff is shallow and falls flat on my funny bone. There’s no clever twists, no character development, no heart and absolutely no point to it. Heck, if the guy actually did become a trap while the girl was away like they joked about then I wouldn’t have given the originality a score any lower than a B. The plot execution itself is neither here nor there in terms of quality but the utter lack of originality is crippling this series so badly that I just want to grab a shotgun and put it out its miserable existence. I even liked To-Love-Ru more than this and I’m using the word “liked” very loosely here. As pointless as that series was, at the very least it had some originality to it unlike this waste of time here.
